Photographing children is what sparked my love for family photography with a house full of boys ages 9, 6 & 4.  Kids make for really fun subjects- they are raw, unfiltered and real.  But I get it, I totally understand how as a parent that “unfiltered and real” behaviour can make for some nerves when it comes to getting dressed and doing family portraits.

Will they sit and stay still? Will they smile?

While these are all valid concerns for the say-cheese studio work or family photography of the past, I have a totally different approach for you:  Lifestyle Photography.  During my sessions we walk, we explore, we tickle, we smile and laugh and have fun.  While I may take the odd look-at-the-camera image,  I’m really going to focus on capturing you being you; not some posed version of your family.  With me, candids are always a given because I feel it is so important to capture the authentic & real, so when you are flipping through the images years from now you will feel that moment, not just see it.

ABOUT YOUR SESSION

LOCATION

The possibilities of location are endless- fields, forests, paths, alleys... anywhere really! Determine the vibe you are going for whether it be woodsy, urban or rural and we can collaborate on a location from there.

The main consideration for any location is really the time of day. SHADE is a photographers best friend; no matter what the location we chose, I will always require a spot out of direct sunlight (think less squinting, beautiful colours & soft lighting) .

Ever thought of a sunset session? If you have children that are up to the timing, I would definitely recommend the gorgeous golden light that a sunset session provides. Meeting an hour before sunset gives us infinite opportunity for locations as we don't need to worry about the harsh rays of midday sun.

WHAT TO EXPECT

My approach to family sessions are lifestyle in nature. Expect to do some exploring around our location; I find having multiple spots in a location gives children a chance to get used to the click of the camera and not get bored too quickly.

I always bring a vintage quilt to my sessions in order to get a chance to get in some tickle or snuggle time. Pack appropriate footwear that allows for flexibility in our session.

WHAT TO WEAR

The million dollar question!!!

I want you to be who you are, so inevitably I'm going to say, wear what feels good.

With that said, there are always going to be items that photograph better than others. Please avoid logos, busy prints, and reflective materials.

It is great when families compliment each other (ie. two colours hinting in various ways throughout the family wardrobe) but not match or are the exact same. Avoid putting the family in the same colour on top ie. all white shirts. I do love solid colours on kids and dark blue jeans or khakis for men. I do have a love affair for long flowy dresses for mammas too but by all means do you ;)
