For years I photographed newborns posed, wrapped and accessorized to the nines but looked back at each session as a creative feeling like something was missing.  It wasn’t until I started to explore lifestyle photography that I realized what I felt was missing: the realness of family, new love and rawness that life with a newborn brings.

Lifestyle photography by definition (Wikipedia) is a kind of photography that mainly aims to capture portrait/people in situations, real life events or milestones in an artistic manner and the life of the every day.  THIS is what speaks to my creative soul.  Once I started approaching my newborn sessions in this manner, what I captured for my clients sparked so much joy.  My clients love looking back on the images of their babe captured in their home; capturing a place and a time in life that is so fleeting yet so wonderful.  I love capturing not only the details from the dark wisps of hair, to the peeling little toes, the nursery but also the connection that forms in the first few weeks with a new babe in your arms.

ABOUT YOUR SESSION

When is the best time for a newborn session?

Newborns are sleepiest within the first 7-10 days which is great for those slightly wrapped, sleepy images. However, the best part of lifestyle newborn portraits is we go with the flow- think of it like a newborn & family session wrapped into one. If your babe isn't sleepy that's okay, we can capture lots of great images when they are wide awake or being soothed in a parents arms.

What should I prepare for a session?

As a photographer I will always gravitate towards natural window light. You can expect me to capture lots of images of you with your new bundle in a room with lots of natural light.

If you can feed baby just prior to our session that will help keep babe sleepy. If it doesn't work with your babies schedule, no worries, we absolutely stop for feeding & changing breaks when required during our time together.

Keeping the environment warm is a great way to get those sleepy slightly wrapped images. Turn the heat up a notch before our session helps with the posing process.

What about outfits? Accessories?

Set out any special accessories or items that are meaningful to your family and newborn lifestyle story.

Neutral clothes and blankets photograph well - think light colours for baby, no flashy prints, less is really more. We want the focus to be on baby and your relationship so natural, light and airy lends to that vibe.

We will visit the nursery and capture some images of your babe in their surroundings. If the nursery isn't picture ready, no worries, we will stick to wherever natural light lives in your home!
